Contemporary art as critical practice

For two days, Delphi became a vibrant hub of reflection and exchange, hosting an in-depth exploration of contemporary art as a vehicle for critique and intervention. The conference “Contemporary art as critical practice,” organized by the Delphi Centre on May 24-25, 2025, brought together a diverse group of artists, theorists, curators, and academics from both Greece and abroad. The event offered a dynamic forum for sharing perspectives and experiences.

Lectures and discussions focused on how contemporary artistic expression has evolved over recent decades within its broader theoretical and historical frameworks. A key issue that emerged was the tension between the critical voice of contemporary art and its institutional entanglements—a recurring theme among many participants.

The roundtable provided space for deeper engagement with central concepts, highlighting both points of convergence and productive tensions among the speakers’ viewpoints. The active participation of the students and researchers from the Athens School of Fine Arts who attended the conference, contributed to a lively, dialectical atmosphere.

For this brief yet impactful period, contemporary art in Greece and worldwide was at the heart of conversation in a place steeped in philosophical and cultural significance—Delphi, the navel of the world. We extend our warm thanks to all speakers and participants and look forward to continuing the engagement with art, theory, and critical practices in our future programs.
